The dark brown ale is inspired by our region where ‘old brown’ is a well-known style. Wijnberg has an abv of 5.8 % and combines two traditional styles of ‘old brown’ to create a new type of old brown beer, that in the flavour profile balances between sweet and sour.

Around Kortrijk and Roeselare you will find quite a bit of red-brown ales and around Oudenaarde they produce the Oudenaards brown. Right in between these regions you can find our brewery so needless to say our brewers are very familiar with this local style of beer. In the Wijnberg we tried to unify the two types of ‘old brown’ to a new kind of ‘old brown’ ale.

For this beer, we blend two thirds of beer aged on wood for at least two years, with one third of young beer. To enhance the complexity of the beer we’ve added a small portion of Jacobins old foederbeer made by our colleagues and close neighbours of brewery Vanderghinste in Bellegem, just 6 kilometers from our brewery.

The used malts give this beer, that has an abv of 5.8 %, its natural dark brown colour. A natural acidification process takes place during the long aging of the beer on wood. The slightly acidic taste combines perfectly with the character of the malt and the sweetness of the residual sugars from the dark malts. The result is a complex flavour balancing between sweet and sour. A beer you can easily let age further in the cellar.

De name of the newest scion in our range is a reference to the Wijnberg-neighbourhood in Wevelgem, where one of our brewers lived a child. At the same time, it is a nod to the wine-like character of the beer. Translated the name reads ‘Mountain of Wine’
